Ancient Icons

Watercolor Painting, 32" X 38"

Fabric has long been the palette on which indigenous people have expressed their connection to nature. By re-creating animal, plant and insect images, they acknowledge and reaffirm how nature is intricately woven into the fabric of their daily lives.

In this painting, "Ancient Icons", the fabric designs of Peru's Quechua Indians communicate this idea in the beautiful and colorful, hand made mantas.

These ancient symbols have been passed down through generations and reveal a historical connection to their ancestors who live in the steep, mountainous grasslands of the Andes.    By incorporating the mountain skyline of Machu Pichu into the folds of the fabric landscape, the artist focuses on the important role nature and environment play in human experience.
