Grand Canyon Journal, Page 14

Late one day we stopped to paint on the Hakatai Shale ledge.  This was one of the most visually exciting places we painted.  The sections of slate were almost like block steps stacked haphazardly into the sides of the canyon walls.   The undersides of the ledges showed signs of ancient sea worm casings.  This canyon section was very straight and the river below the over-hanging ledges was swift with smooth ripples.   The wind and the water flowed straight and fast!  The elevation of the river must have dropped quickly,  for it appeared to fall fast and smooth like it was shooting out of a giant garden hose.
