Grand Canyon Journal, Page 19

We drifted into our next overnight area just past the President Harding Rapids.  I noticed that our arrival was noted almost immediately by the Canyon Ravens.  They swirled down among us, with no fear of any consequences.  These were the largest ravens I have ever seen in my life!  I estimate they stood 24" tall.   They watched, as we unloaded our gear, and I observed one pouncing upon Curt's slightly opened backpack. Before anyone could get to it, the raven had pulled out something and made off with it.  We all now knew the game plan and took greater care.  We did not want to list a Canyon Raven as being on one of our collectors list with one of our paintings!

The rising sun hit the edge of the canyon and bounced a white- yellow light off the far wall of Point Hansbrough.  It bathed the rock wall in amber- gold light as the edge of the light and shadow, slowly with the turning of the earth, slid down the canyon to the river below.  The light reflected blue and red in the smooth undulating rapids of the river at my feet.  I sipped my coffee, to stunned by this light show to scramble for my paints.  The next day on the river had already  begun.
