Grand Canyon Journal, Page 22Of all the places in the canyon, Nankoweap Rapids was the most open. We spent several days camped here and this gave us all the opportunity to hike up into the side canyons and paint from more elevated vantage points. I hiked, with Kartina Rogers and Fran Joseph, up a stair step trail to several of the many Anastazi granaries tucked into the high cliffs. Once at the top, I found the peace and solitude of this location very meditative. Further up, I found Barrel cactus, Brittle-brush, evening primrose, and Four-o-clock Prickly-pear. It was as if one could hear the day to day sounds of the ancient culture which inhabited this area. I envied the lizards for their daily panoramic view from such a place, and I imagined them dashing out to grab an insect among the White peppergrass. We watched the feathers on the back of a red- tailed hawk as it cruised by on wind currents below our feet. Looking for lunch we imagined!
