Grand Canyon Journal, Page 7

My camp site was nestled in the soft, fine sand, up the side of the river so I could overlook the long narrow slit where the water roared through.  I found some tiny tracks in the sand leading out from under a large rock.  Upon further investigation, I discovered a beautiful Velvet ant with a fluffy yellow and orange abdomen.  It moved along at a fast clip, hunting for unsuspecting insects.  I looked under the rock while the brilliantly colored hunter was gone, and discovered that their nests walls are constructed of wet sand and saliva mixed together to make a wedge between the larger rock and the sand.  The ant then excavated the space and nestled down, out of sight for the night.
