By Natasha Heinz, Photos by Daulton Venglar, Lifestyles of Sedona, Spring 2019 / Comment on this

Mary Helsaple: A Work in Nature By Natasha Heinz, Photos by Daulton Venglar Reproduced from the Lifestyles of Sedona, Spring 2019 Mary Helsaple's studio is surrounded by red rocks. Shades of orange, grayish green and brown encircle the house. The inside, however, is completely different. Huge watercolor paintings with splashes of bright red and yellow hang on almost every wall, depicting environments that could never be found around Sedona: Colorful tropical forests, which she has seen during numerous travels throughout the Americas. A nature lover, Helsaple traveled alongside husband Neal Williams to Florida to see pelicans, to Yucatan to see Flamingos, to southeastern Peru and western [...]

Mary Helsaple Trouble in Paradise (Amazon Rainforest) 1994, Watercolor on Paper 36 x 48 inches Collection of the Artist © Mary Helsaple    Early in my career, I loved the mechanics of printmaking, and drawing and I began to create visual narratives about my world. I was resolving on a larger scale, thoughts about the mechanics of religion, politics, community, government, corporations etc. I drew situations that represented where an individual is linked by inter-relationships to the greater humanity of the world. How would I ‘negotiate’ [...]

Zachary Jernigan / 4 Comments

Written by Zachary Jernigan     Red Rock News, Sedona, AZ    November 12th, 2015 According to artist Mary Helsaple, when you painted with simple watercolors as a child you were in fact witnessing a complicated thing: "The marriage between brush, pigment and paper."According to Helsaple, her recently released book "Physics of Watercolor: A Guide to the Techniques in Watercolor Painting" was named in recognition of how each element comes together.
